Media Week: Wrap-Up
Today is the last day of my media “fast.” My goal was to limit myself to my gmail account, job search sites, and this blog. I wouldn’t say that I failed miserably, but I wasn’t particularly diligent, either. I found myself “sneaking” on Facebook more than once. But I didn’t really get too sucked in to the internet, my biggest media time-suck. Today, I finished reading The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind and I plan to write a bit about that later. Possessions week was really hard, and I had to just pick up and start again with media.
We have gained some insight from each week so far. We’re more intentional when it comes to eating. We’ve been prioritizing the farmer’s market as we shop, and our meals are more about good food than convenience. Clothing, I can’t say what I’m doing differently at the moment, but it added another area where I’m at least aware of what I have, vs. what I need. Possessions, well..I don’t want to talk about it, it was a hard week. Now with media, I’m realizing my excess in the form of time. And how the constant access I allow myself to information keeps me from doing the kids of things I’d rather to doing. You know, like spending time with my kids… When I stop trying to occupy my mind with a constant flood of often useless information, I find more productive and enjoyable things to do.
We’re coming to the end of this week, and strongly considering getting rid of the internet in our home. We did it last year, it was just one more unnecessary expense, and it really sucked up a lot of time. We’ll see how it goes on that front. I’ll go kicking and screaming, but I’ll most likely go ahead and do it.
